5 Signs Your Brakes Need Attention
Don't ignore these warning signs — brake problems only get worse (and more expensive) over time.
Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Here are five signs it's time to get them checked:
1. Squealing or Grinding Noises
High-pitched squealing usually means your brake pads are worn down to the wear indicators. Grinding means the pads are completely gone and metal is contacting metal — stop driving and get to a shop immediately.
2. Spongy or Low Brake Pedal
If your pedal feels soft or goes to the floor, you may have air in the brake lines or a fluid leak. This is a serious safety issue.
3. Steering Wheel Vibration
A pulsating steering wheel when braking usually indicates warped rotors. Resurfacing or replacement will fix the issue.
4. Pulling to One Side
If your car pulls left or right when braking, you may have a stuck caliper or uneven brake pad wear.
5. Longer Stopping Distance
If it takes longer to stop than it used to, your brake pads may be glazed or your brake fluid may be old. Don't take chances — get it inspected.
