The first rain of the season is the most dangerous day of the year to drive — months of dust and rubber make the surface uniquely slippery.

Before the rains

• Check tread depth; replace wipers that streak
• Test brakes on an empty stretch after your first wet drive

In the rain

• Aquaplaning? Ease off the accelerator, steer straight, do not brake hard
• Never enter water above axle height — turn around
• Keep double distance from the vehicle ahead
