How to check a BIS hallmark before you buy
Six digits, four symbols and one tiny triangle — what the hallmark on your gold actually tells you, and how to read it across the counter.
What the hallmark contains
BIS hallmarking has been mandatory for 22K and 18K gold since 2021, and each hallmark carries four marks:
- The BIS logo — a triangle with rounded corners.
- The fineness mark — 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K, 999 for 24K.
- The assaying centre's mark.
- The jeweller's mark — a six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification).
How to verify it
Download the BIS Care app and enter the six-digit HUID, or scan the QR code on the hallmark. The app shows the jeweller's name, the assaying centre and the fineness. If the number does not resolve, walk away.
A hallmark is only worth something if you verify it in front of the counter before paying. It takes thirty seconds.
