Catching the Morning Catch with Local Fishers
Every dawn, the boats of Govind Nagar set out. Our chef joins them — and so can you.
At 5:30 AM, before the first ferry and before the sun clears the palms, the fishing boats of Govind Nagar village push off from the beach. I have made the trip with them almost every week since I joined the resort, and it remains the best kitchen research on earth.
The Market That Moves
The catch is not ordered — it is discovered. One morning it is a boatload of tuna and sardines; the next, reef fish and the odd snapper. Whatever lands on the deck decides the Lagoon House menu that evening, and the fishermen decide nothing is wasted: roe becomes a chutney, the collars get grilled with turmeric, and the smallest fish go into a slow curry that tastes like the whole island.
Coming Along
Guests can join the dawn trip with the village boats twice a week. It is not a tourist cruise — it is honest work with generous people who will teach you to bait a line, read the tide, and respect the sea. The fish you help land may well be on your dinner plate that night, and I will make sure you get the story of it.
When you know the name of the man who caught your dinner, eating becomes a different act entirely.
