How to care for a street dog during the monsoon
Shelter, dry food, and a few simple precautions keep colony dogs healthy through the rains.
The monsoon is hard on street dogs. Wet coats, contaminated water, and a drop in available scraps all take their toll. Here is what helps.
Shelter
A simple raised, roofed box with a dry blanket is enough. Keep the entrance small and facing away from the prevailing rain. Lift it off the ground on bricks to stop it sitting in water.
Food and water
Replace wet kibble daily — damp food spoils fast. Provide clean water in a shallow, heavy bowl that won't tip. Avoid milk for adult dogs; it upsets their stomach.
Watch for
Maggot wounds on ears and paws are common in the rains. If you see a dog shaking its head constantly or licking a spot raw, call us. Early cleaning prevents a terrible few days.
