Biscuit beats parvo, one glucose drip at a time

Five days of isolation, fluids and round-the-clock watch — Biscuit turned the corner last Tuesday and is eating again.
Biscuit came in from a Hadapsar colony showing the classic signs: lethargy, vomiting, and a fever that would not break. The parvo snap test was positive within ten minutes.
Parvovirus is brutal on puppies. Survival is a matter of keeping them hydrated and their nausea controlled long enough for their own immune system to catch up. Biscuit spent five days in isolation on a glucose drip, with volunteers taking three-hour shifts around the clock.
Last Tuesday he ate a spoonful of rice. On Wednesday he wagged. By Friday he was barking for his food. Biscuit will need two more weeks of isolation before he can meet other dogs, but he is out of the woods.
Survival is a matter of keeping them hydrated long enough for their own immune system to catch up.
