10 Habits of Drivers Who Never Crash
Defensive driving is not a talent — it is a checklist. Here are the ten habits our instructors drill until they become reflexes.
Most collisions are not caused by bad drivers, they are caused by ordinary drivers doing predictable things at the worst moment. Every habit below is taught inside our Standard course.
The checklist
- Mirrors before ignition, not after
- The three-second following rule — four in rain
- Cover the brake whenever a ball, dog or child could appear
- Never overtake at a junction, however clear it looks
- Headlights on at dusk, not darkness
- Announce every intent: indicators early, horn sparingly
- Slow before a bend, power through it — not the reverse
- Assume every parked car has a door about to open
- Rest before you need it; fatigue lies to you
- Arrive late rather than never
The best drivers are boring ones — nothing dramatic ever happens around them.
Print the list, stick it on your dashboard for a month, and by week five you will do all ten without thinking. That is the entire secret.
