The Linen Loft

The Linen Loft is a renovation of a cast-iron SoHo loft for a client who wanted a single, deeply restful sleeping quarter rather than a maximalist open plan. We reduced the program to its essentials: a sleeping platform, a bathing room, and a quiet sitting area.

Original brick walls were cleaned and finished in a hand-troweled lime wash that softens their hard edges and glows in the east-facing morning light. A floating oak platform houses the bed and a low storage run, lifted off the floor to preserve the sense of the loft's generous proportions.

A single full-height linen curtain can be drawn to divide the sleeping platform from the sitting area, transforming the acoustics and mood in one gesture. Plumbing fixtures in unlacquered brass will darken naturally over the years the client lives here.
