The guitar is the instrument most likely to follow you out of the studio and into the rest of your life. It travels, it sits in corners of rooms, and it invites other people to sing along. That sociability is part of why we love teaching it.
We teach acoustic and electric guitar, and we cover the folk, pop, blues, and indie repertoire that our students actually listen to. The fundamentals are the same either way: clean chords, steady rhythm, and a picking hand that listens. You do not need to know what kind of guitar you want before your first lesson — come and try both.
Is the guitar right for you?
The guitar suits most beginners from around age eight. Younger hands can struggle with the width of the neck, and for very small children we usually suggest starting on ukulele and moving across. For teenagers and adults, the guitar is one of the most rewarding first instruments there is.
What you will need
- A guitar — acoustic or electric. We can advise on a first instrument and recommend local rentals
- A tuner (a phone clip tuner is inexpensive and effective)
- A pick or two and a capo once you are past the first chords
