Walk into any showroom and you will hear about DVRs, NVRs, XVRs and hybrids. Strip away the jargon and it comes down to three things:

Cable type

DVRs use coax cable (the older round wire), NVRs use network cable (Cat6, like internet wiring). If you already have good coax in the walls, an XVR lets you reuse it.

Image processing

In analog systems the camera sends raw video and the recorder processes it. In IP systems the camera does the thinking and the recorder just stores it. That is why IP scales better.

Where you plan to grow

Starting with 4 cameras and stopping there? A DVR kit is honest value. Planning a shop today and a warehouse next year? Start on IP — the recorder grows by adding switches, not by replacing everything.
