Monsoon Diary: 40 Days in Kutch Building Check-Dams

Stone from the hill, labour from MGNREGA and a wall that shows cost per litre — how 120 structures filled in one monsoon.

Monsoon Diary: 40 Days in Kutch Building Check-Dams cover

We arrived in Rapar on 12 June with 140 households, a barefoot engineer and a hill of stone. The gram sabha had already marked the nala, the MGNREGA mates had booked labour, and the sarpanch had whitewashed a wall outside the panchayat for public accounts.

₹0.38 per litre

Each structure's cost, labour and capacity were painted on that wall and photographed after every monsoon. The first three dams filled in 11 hours on 4 July. By 22 July, 47 villages were reporting overflow.

The diary includes daily labour logs, water-level photographs and social audit minutes — all scanned and filed.
