Water

Jal Jeevan

Reviving traditional water harvesting — 1,240 taankas, nadis and check-dams built with shramdaan, mapped and maintained by the village.

Water is not a project here, it is memory work. Jal Jeevan revives beris, taankas and nadis that the Thar always knew, using MGNREGA labour and community shramdaan. Every structure is mapped on a wall painting outside the gram panchayat — capacity, cost, contractor and water-level markings updated after each monsoon.

Since 2015 we have built or revived 1,240 structures in Kutch and western Rajasthan, adding an estimated 18 crore litres of storage. Maintenance is contracted to the village water committee, paid from a corpus funded by the trust.

How we work

  • PRA mapping of old water bodies with elders
  • Wall-painted public accounts in every village
  • Yearly post-monsoon water audit
