Why Your Deadlift Has Stalled — A Coach's Diagnostic
4 Jul 2026 · By Rohan Mehta, Functional & Mobility Coach (FMS L2)
If your deadlift has sat at the same number for two months, the fix is rarely “try harder”. It is “find the weak link”. Every stuck deadlift fails in the same three places — off the floor, at the knees, or at lockout — and each place points to a different weakness.
Where Does It Stick?
1. Fails Off the Floor (You Cannot Break the Bar)
Hips too high at setup, quads not engaged, bar drifts forward. This is a leg drive problem.
- Test: Can you pause 1 inch off the floor for 2 seconds with 80% weight? If not, quad strength is the limiter.
- Fix: Paused deadlifts (pause 1 inch off floor) + front squats 3×5 once a week.
2. Fails at Mid-Shin / Knees (You Get It Up, Then It Stalls)
Common when you are strong off the floor but slow through the middle. Your back rounds, the bar hitches.
- Test: Compare deficit deadlift vs block pull. If block pull is much stronger, mid-range is weak.
- Fix: Deficit deadlifts (2 inch stand) + Romanian deadlifts. Cue “push the floor away, then drive hips through”.
3. Fails at Lockout (You Can Stand Up, But Cannot Finish)
Glutes not firing, grip slips, you lean back instead of driving hips. Often a glute + grip issue disguised as strength.
- Test: Can you hold the top of a heavy rack pull for 5 seconds without grip slip? If grip goes first, that is your answer.
- Fix: Hip thrusts + heavy farmer carries. Mixed grip or hook grip only above 85%.
The 4-Week Reset We Use at Ironclad
Do not change everything. Change one variable per block.
- Week 1–2: Drop to 75% and rebuild with the paused variant that targets your sticking point. Film every work set from the side.
- Week 3: Re-test single at 90% — if speed is back, you fixed it; if not, film again and reassess.
- Week 4: Deload — 2 sessions of 60% for speed, mobility focus, walk 8K steps daily.
I see almost no one fail because they are too weak. They fail because they are tired. Three hard pulls a week with no deload is not toughness — it is poor planning. — Rohan
We programme deadlift once heavy, once light per week for most members, with a deload every fourth week. Simple, but it has added 10 to 20 kilos to stalled lifts repeatedly.
